WOMEN’S CRICKET

Club Formed in Napier ENTHUSIASTIC MEETING Evidence of the popularity ol women’s cricket in Napier was noticeable at a meeting held in Napier South last evening, when over 20 women unanimously decided to form a club. The meeting was representative of all parts of the borough, including Port Ahuriri. Officers were elected and, the preliminaries having been considered, immediate steps will be taken to organise a women’s cricket competition during the approaching summer. Mr W. E. Barnard, M.P., presided over last n'gut’s meeting. Valuable assistance and information was given by Mr A. Reid, who was also present. He is a member of the Hawke’s Bay Cricket Association aud uf the Hawke s Bay Umpires' Association.

The increasing popularity ol women’s cricket in the Dominion was pointed out and tbo sentiments of last night’s meeting were that Napiei should not lag behind other centres so far as the game of cricket was concerned. The following officers were elected:— Patron, Mr W. E. Barnard, M.P. ; president, Mr R. M. Chadwick; vicepresident*, Messrs C. 0. Morse, G Husheer and H. B. Lusk ; hon. secretary and treasurer, Miss Vercoe. Women’s cricket is not new to this district. Apart from the game played in girls’ schools, there was a women’s club in Meeanee some 20 to 25 years ago.
