WAIPAWA HIGH SCHOOL

Request For New Building MATTER OF URGENCY The Hawke’s Bay Education Boaro to-day considered an application from the Waipawa District High School Committee for the erection of a new school. The committee forwarded the following resolution:— “Tho Waipawa District High School Committee again strongly urges the claim of Waipawa for the erection of a new school. It is now five years since the matter of erection of a new school fof Waipawa stood first on the board’s list of urgent rebuilding. The committee recognises the difficulties which followed the earthquake of 1931, and that the rebuilding programme had of necessity to bo reviewed. Tho committee now claims that tho time has more than arrived when, by reason of age of the present building (some sixty years) necessitating constant repairs, the lack of proper accomodation and of playing area, the erection of a new building should now reasonably be conceded, and trusts that the department will give consideration in the near future to the committee’s request.”

Mr Maddison said that this school would have to be placed on the urgency list. The question of rebuilding had previously been shelved because of tho general economic position, but the country had revived and the matter would have to bo re-opened. He suggested that the question of securing a better site than the one purchased some years ago should be left in the hands of himself and tho board members. The board agreed with the chairman’s suggestion.
