ARRESTED IN AMERICA

• — Strachey to Fight Deportation CHICAGO, March 14. Mr Evelyn John St. Loe Strachey, the British author who was arrested on March 12 on a charge that he entered the United States by means of false and misleading statements, appeared before the immigration officials to-day to anewer charges. However, the formal hearing was postponed till March 21. Meanwhile he will continue his lecture tour. Mr Strachey is scheduled to return to England on March 29, but is also determined to fight the charges through the Courts. He commented, “I may have to come back from England for my own deportation.” Although the Government has taken no action to curb Mr Strachey’s propaganda activities, Liberal organisations throughout the nation are prepared to make an issue of the case to counteract what they term the “Red scare” being fomented by “the Hearst Press and various so-called patriotic organisations.’’ The Civil Liberties Union and the International Labour Defence have already supplied legal aid. Hundreds of protests against Mr Strachey’s deportation have been forwarded to Washington, many of them addressed to President Roosevelt personally.
