FEDERAL ELECTIONS
The Latest Figures
STATE OF THE PARTIES
SYDNEY, Sept. 17
To-day’s fresh election figures did not appreciably alter tho party strength as outlined yesterday. The loss of the Werriwa -seat by the United Australia candidate, Mr. T. Mutch, to the State Labourite, Mr. H. Lazzarini, seems beyond doubt. This seat last election was won f(pm State Labour by the Country Party candidate, Mr. W. McNicholl, who stood down on this occasion, hence Mr Lazzarini recovers the seat ho originally held with the aid of the new electoral boundaries. Similar influences aro operating in the Barton electorate, where the United Australian candidate, Mr.. A. Lane, seems likely to lose his seat to the original party, State Labour, whose nominee, Mr. J. C. Eldridge, is now overhauling Mr. Lane. Other definitely doubtful seats from tho party viewpoint are: Maranoa and Moroton (Queensland), Denison (Tasmania) and Fremantle (Perth). Tho outcome of these will probably not bo known until the end of the week, when tho preferences are cheeked and the 132,000 absentee postal votes handled. Meanwhile, the party position based on the latest figures remains substantially as follows:— United Australia Party 31 United Country Party 11 Federal Labour 15 State Labour 7 Doubtful 10 ELECTION OF 1931 Mr. J. A. Lyons’s Triumph The Lyons Government came into power us the result of the general election on December ID, 1931. That election was precipitated by the action of the smalj J/ang Labour group in the House of Representatives, who moved what was virtually a vote of censure on the Labour Government, led by Mr. J. H Scullin, through an attack made
FEDERAL GENERAL ELECTION TRIUMPH.—Mr. J. A. Lyons, Prime Minister of Australia, whose Government has again been returned to power as the result of the Federal general election which was held on Saturday.
ou the then Federal Treasurer, Mr. E. G. Theodore. Mr. Scullin secured a dissolution and put the issue to the people. Two years after tho Federal Labour Party had been elected with 47 members against the 28 that the other parties could muster it could only secure the return of 14 of its candidates. Mr. Theodore was defeated b.v a Lang candidate and other Ministers lost their seats.
Neither South Australia nor Tasmania returned a Labour candidate and only in Queensland did Labour unseat a sitting member of the other parties. That election was a personal triumph for Mr J. A. Lyons, who founded and still leads lhe United Australia I’urty.
