As a sequel to a smash-and-grab raid at a pawnbroker’s shop in Auckland on September I, Frank Edgar Gibson, aged 18, a painter, William Ernest Hewins, aged 26, a labourer pleaded guilty to-day to breaking and entering and stealing 44 diamond rings of a toal value of JL‘ll2. They were cominited for sentence. After the theft they went to Hamilton, where Gibson was arrested trying te sell a ring. Hewins reached Wellington, selling a lew rings ou tho way ami when arrested handed over 34 rings.—Press Assn.
Ninety entries from various parts of New Zealand have been received for the Oamaru-to-Christchurch road race, of 170 miles, to bo conducted next Saturday to decide the New Zealand road championship. 'The scratch men are H. G. Watson (Christchurch), Burke and H. Snowden (New Plymouth). A. N. Ralston (Dunedin), W. J. Lamberton, L. G. Thomas, S. W. Weir (Christchurch), and L. G. Lukey (Amberley). The limit is 90mins.
