BASKETBALL

MATCHES TN NAPIER. The second week of the Napier basketball competitions found teams in several cases depleted owing to members being on the sick list, and m some cases the teams were unable to take the field. The absence of school teams made a considerable difference to the numbers present, and matches were completed earlier than usual. 'The ground was very slippery, with the result that players found it hard to keep on their feet. Nevertheless, some good games were witnessed by the spectators, who gathered to cheer on their respective favourites. The following are the results of games, played:— FIRST GRADE Ex-High (9) v Rovers (8). C.O.G. (13) v Hukarere (10). Friendly match. Athletic (25) v Te Awa (3). SECOND GRADE Ex-High 3 (5) v Ex-High 2 (4) Pirates 1 (15) v C.O.G. (5). Athletic (16) v Te Awa 2 (2). Pirates 2 (14) v Hukarere (8). Friendly match. THIRD GRADE Te Awa won by default from ExHigh. Pirates (10) v Athletic (8). M.G.'S v. BEATALLS. The Drill Hall, Hastings, was again in commission last Friday evening for the basketball match between the M.G. and Beatalls, which was won by the former by 22 to 7. Judging by .the number of contests which are already arranged, it looks as if indoor basketball games are to be very popular this winter The ladies again supplied the supper, which was enjoyed by all. Miss DFarmery, on behalf of the ladies, thanked the members of the M.G. dub for a very enjoyable evening. The usual mixed partners played the different games during the remainder of the evening.
