CROQUET TOURNAMENT

SILVER BUTTONS COMPETITION PLAY IN THREE GRADES The Havike’s Bay Croquet Association’s annual competition for the New Zealand Croquet Council’s silver buttons took place this week. Play was on the Hastings-and Kia Ton lawns, all eight lawns being brought into use In the A and B grades all matches were best out of three. In the C grade single matches were played. Entries exceeded those of former years. In the A grade five chibs were represented; in the B grade nine clubs; and in the C grade seven clubs. Results were as follow- — A GRADE First Round, Mrs Wood (Waipiikurau) beat Mrs Ball (Port), 26—9, 26—16. Miss Carrington (Hastings) won by default from Mrs Freedman (United). Second Hound. Miss Carrington (Hastings) beat Mrs Rust (Waipawa) 26—18, 26 —8. Mrs Wood (Waipiikurau) beat Miss Lydford (Napier), 26 —22, 26 —11. Final. Miss Carrington beat Mrs Wood. 26—18, 8-26, 26—24. B GRADE First Round. Mrs Tomlinson (Hastings) beat Mrs Kennedy (Port),227,6 —7, 26—20. Mrs Grindley (United) beat Mrs Meads (Havelock), 26—18, 26—10. Second Round. Mrs Tomlinson (Hastings) beat Mrs Hopkins (Kia Toa), 26—16; 26—13. Airs Grindley (United) beat Mrs Gollan (Waipawa), 26—19, 18 —26. 26-21. Third Round. Mrs Tomlinson (Hastings) beat Mrs Belcher (Napier), 26—12, 15—11 (match unfinished). Mrs Grindley (United) beat Mrs McLean (Wairerc), 26—1-1. (Second game bv default). Final. Mrs Grindley (United) beat Mrs Tomlinson (Hastings), 26—11, 2C —8. C GRADE. First Round. Sirs Ashworth (Kia Toa) beat Mrs Butler (Oniarunui), 26—7. Mrs Petersen (Hastings) beat Mrs Popplewell (Port), 26—13. Mrs Boyle (Havelock) beat Mrs Tierney (Napier), 26 —11. Second Round. Mrs Petersen (Hastings) beat Mrs Ashworth (Kia Toa). 26—18. Mrs Sinclair (Wairere) beat Mrs Boyle (Havelock), 26—24. Final. Mrs Sinclair (Wairere) beat Mrs Petersen (Hastings), 26 —21. INTER-CLUB MATCHES C-grade inter-club matches were concluded last week, when Hastings played tho Herctaunga club, Hastings making 203 points and Herctaunga 82.
