SHIPPING INDUSTRY

Scandinavian Concern DESIRE FOR CONFERENCE (British Official Wireless.) (Received 6, 12.30 p.m.) RUGBY, April 5. The Danish, Netherlands, Norwegian and Swedish Governments, through their respective Ministers in I-ondon, have recently made representations to the British Government regarding the present precarious state of the shipping industry, expressing the view that this is chiefly due to the shrinkage of world trade, over-production of ships in past years and the uneconomic competition of subsidised vessels. They have declared willingnes to cooperate with the British Government in any attempt to find remedies, and are prepared to send delegates to any maritime conference the British Government might convene to discuss the abolition or limitation of subsidies ami the restoration of equilibrium in the shipping trade by adjusting supply; also measures that might be submitted to a conference which would help to combat the depression and restore the industry to its former condition of sound economic competition.
