GOLF CONTEST

KIRK-WINDEYER CUP Foursomes on the Way FIRST 18 HOLES 'By Telegraph-Press Association.) AUCKLAND, April 6. The Kirk-Windeyer Cup golf contest between New South Wales (holders) and New Zealand opened on the Middlemore links to-day. The weather is ideal. The first 18 holes of the foursomes were completed after 1 o’clock. T. H. Horton and D. V. Wright (New Zealand) were 1 up on W. R. Dobson and F. P. Hughes, and B. M. Silk and S. P. Hornabrook (New Zealand) were all square with Cutler and C. C. Rowaid. Apperley, tho visitors’ captain, decided to stand down in the foursomes. In the first match Hughes and Dob. son struck trouble early, and were three down after the sixth, and two down at the turn. The general quality of the play was mediocre, and this is illustrated in the figures. Horton and Wright took 79 to complete the course, the scratch score of which js 73. The honours of this game were distinctly with the New Zealanders, but coming home the play of both pairs bristled with errors, the New Zealanders letting golden opportunities slip at the 11th and 12th holes. Approximately New Zealand took 37 out and 42 home, and New South Wales 43 and 40. In the other match the golf was even less inspiring, and it would be difficult to imagine an international match with more errors. CANTERBURY WOMEN’S TITLE (By Telegraph—Press Association.)
