RIVER DIVERSION

Closing of Old Channel TWENTY TEAMS ENGAGED Twenty teams are now employed in the closing of the old waterway of the Tutaekuri river at Powdrell’s Bend and in two days time the filling is expected to be to the levels of the berms. Mr. C. Lassen, chairman of the Hawke’s Bay Rivers Board, who visited the work this morning, expressed himself as being satisfied with the way it was proceeding. He stated that the work of closing the old waterway was commenced yesterday, all the teams in both gangs being concentrated on this filling. In order to prevent any scour oceuring at this point the inside slope of the filling is to be fascined, the material for this purpose being already on the ground. In connection with the work being carried on below Brookfields bridge, Mr. Lassen said that the two gangs were taking advantage of the fine weather to construct the toe of the new bank across a wet section of the ground. On Monday next the Works Committee intend to confer with the engineer, Mr. G. Rochfort, to consider the advisability of proceeding with the closing of the breach some 30 chains below the bridge which was washed away during the flood in May last. The repairing of the breach would be on the alignment of the new bank. Mr. Lassen added that good work was done by the men during the week, those in the No. 2 gang earning 12/9 per man per day, while each team earned 33/- per day.
