H.B. RABBIT BOARD

MONTHLY MEETING. The ordinary monthly meeting of the Hawke’s Bay Babbit Board was held on Wednesday afternoon. Present: Messrs T. E. Crosse (chairman), L. M. Monckton, E. Averill, H. E. Allen, and Chief Inspector Amyes. Leave of absence was granted to Messrs M. Greenwood and J. B. Campbell. A complaint was received from a ratepayer that the attitude of one of the board’s inspectors had been troublesome in reference to the position of rabbiting on his property. Another complaint was received from a ratepayer in reference to the bad state of the pest on a part of the NapierWairoa railway line area.

After thoroughly investigating the complaints the board decided that neither of them was justified, and the secretary -was instructed to forward copies of the reports supporting its conclusion to each ratepayer concerned. The chairman mentioned that in reference to the complaint against the inspector, some time ago the board, realising the increase of the pest on account of the favourable season, gave instructions to all the inspectors, through Chief Inspector Amyes, to point out to those ratepayers whose properties were becoming badly infested the seriousness of the position, and it had been necessary to serve notices on quite a number of ratepayers. He also pointed out that the area of railway line referred to by one of the complainants had been attended to by one of the board’s most reliable rabbiters under the supervision of an inspector, and the reports received both from the rabbiter and the inspector strongly suggested that this complaint also was not -warranted. This rabbiter had worked for the boaid for quite a number of years and had always been found to be thoroughly practical and reliable.

Accounts amounting to £-169 18/7 were passed for payment. The inspectors’ reporls were read, and it was decided that under the circumstances the position was quite favourable and that further increase of the pest was being checked. The chairman suggested that the local inspector for the Government accompany the board's inspector over areas which had recently been cleaned up, and it was decided to write to the Department, of Agriculture, Wellington, asking it to instruct the local inspector to that effect for the purpose of confirming the position
