MID-WEEK CRICKET
HASTINGS COMPETITION, FINAL SERIES COMMENCED. The final series of matches in the Hastings Cricket Sub-Association’s Ihursday competition were commenced at Cornwall Park, Hastings, yesterday, when several excellent batting performances were recorded, notably a splendid 1-18 by Rouse, of Heretaunga. Chief interest centred in tho Here-taunga-Methodist game, for on its result rested the championship. Methodists batted first, but made only 70 runs, the best contributions being those of Gosnell 25, Tunnecliffe 14 not out and McGill 12. .Mitchell and Rouse bowled throughout the innings to collect five wickets for 41 and three for 27 respectively.
In reply Heretaunga put up 271, Rouse and McDuff being the outstanding contributors with 148 (two sixes and 17 fours) and 60 (nine fours) respectively. Ingram also made 15 and Lyndon 12 not out. Patterson secured five wickets for 64 runs. In the other game Whakatu kept Tomoana leather-hunting throughout the afternoon, whilst amassing a. total of 223. Scott was unbeaten for 66 (nine fours') to head the list of contributions,o thers being Milne 38, Orr 33, Rosenberg 28 and Wilcock 12. J. Mitchell took four wickets for 66 runs and Brimmer and Mahoney two each.
