TELEGRAPHIC CHARGES

Criticised in Christchurch By Telegraph—Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, April 5. The telegraphic bills of several Christchurch business houses have increased since the new scale of charges was introduced by 10 to 15 per cent. This statement was made and widely supporteel at a meeting of the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce tonight.

In the discussion the action of the Government in imposing the extra rate was criticised severely, several speakers describing it as merely a device to obtain more revenue. The suggestion made was that business firms would not pay this extra tax and would be obliged to make less use of the telegraphic service so that the department might actually lose revenue. All agreed, however, that the now rates involved increased cost to business houses, to whom lower rates for shorter distances were of little value. It was decided to send a telegram of protest to the Minister, and also to ask the Postmaster-General to make public the revenue derived from telegrams last year, and also publish an estimate of the sum which would have been received if the present chargee were in force
