FINGERPRINT SYSTEM
Subject (if Controversy INFALLIBFLITY QUESTIONED LONDON, March 2. Some doubt has been thrown on the fingerprint system as providing an infallible clue to identity, says the “Daily Mail.” It follows the conviction with a sentence of two months’ imprisonment of George Groves for theft at Bristol, though his fingerprints were the prosecution’s only evidence.
Police experts say the system is 100 per cent reliabl though Dr. Galt, the eminent pathologist, admits .the possibility that there may be two persons in the world with identical fingerprints.
British scientists do not credit the American claim that fingerprints can be altered surgically, and doctors say the operation would be most painful, and would leave a permanent scar. A Scotland Yard Commissioner, Sir Trevor Bigham, says the classification of fingerprints is the most valuable contribution yet made to police work. European experts are similarly convinced of its reliability. Fingerprint identification suffices for a conviction in Germanv.
Dr. Locard, famous French criminologist says no case of error has ever been discovered or ever will be.
