WRESTLING

HAWKE’S BAY ASSOCIATION. PAST YEAR’S ACTIVITIES. The fourth annual report of the H.B. Wrestling Association, to be presented at the annual meeting in Hastings on Friday night, reads as follows: — “In presenting to you the fourth annual report covering the past year’s activities we are pleased to state that the season was the most successful experienced since the inception of the association. “The association’s operations for the year resulted in a credit balance which, having regard to the times, must be deemed highly satisfactory. We were able to stage nine contests, which number was greater than any other association with the exception of Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch. The contests were:—Patter-son-Beth. Mamos-Blake, Pereira-Blake, Oswald-Clark, Rumberg-Pereira, V argaOswald, Walker-Patterson, ManiosRumberg and Walker-Pereira. We also staged the Hawke’s Bay provincial amateur championships, which produced some good talent in addition to creating interest in the amateur side of the association’s activities.

“The following are the title holders: —Small, heavy; Kent, light-heavy; Morley, middle; Walker, welter; Burton, light; Kirschberg, feather. It is pleasing to note the increasing number of lads taking up the sport, as no better exercise, conducive to health, can be obtained than that involved in training for wrestling. “The cups for the title holders, two of which were generously donated ny Messrs. Styles and Styles and ‘ Anonymous’ were presented by our patron, Mr. G. A. Maddison, at a very successful smoke concert held at the end of the season.

“We sent two representatives, J. Kent and E. Morley, to the New Zea_land amateur championships at Wellington and, although unsuccessful in winning titles, both lads put up meritorious performances.

“It is now quite evident that modern wrestling has become very popular in New Zealand, and this is reflected in the attendance at the contests staged last season, also hy the number of new associations that have come into being in various towns in the Dominion.

“Reports received from headquarters, Wellington, state that the coming season will witness an influx from the United States of wrestlers of a very high ■ status. “The association’s operations last season helped in a minor degree to circulate money in the town, and any society or association that contributes to that commendable aim is deserving of the whole-hearted support of the public. “.Some of the items of expenditure were: —Wages £BO, advertising £lOO, rent £142, and amateur trophy orders on various business people, £65. We also paid to the Government £125 by way of amusement tax.

“Thanks are due to the members of the executive for the manner in which they worked harmoniously during the season tq achieve the success that was attained. Also, we would like to express to the Press our thanks for the co-operation and support accorded. We also extend our thanks to Mr. Ike Robin, for his services as referee, our publicity officer, the honorary doctors, and the honorary secretary and treasurer, Mr. H. B. Bunny.’’
