CRITICAL TEST POSITION Chapman May Captain England (Received 4, 1.45 p.m.) LONDON, April 3. The “Daily Express” has sent Colonel Trevor and Mr, Wignall to Colombo to travel with the Australian team. Cabling to-day, Mr. Wignall states: “It is unfortunate that the bad feeling created at Colombo by the Marylebone visit is unabated. Those claiming to be close friends of Jardine say openly that pressure was brought to bear on him not to play. They also allege that Larwood, and possibly others, will decline invitations to play in (he tests and suggest that if Sutcliffe and Hammond, who signed the declaration in support of Jardine, are affected the situation will be extremely critical. The Australians may even decide to abandon the tests rather than play a non-representative English team.”
Mr. Wignall says: “I was told that private conferences between the Rt. Hon. S. M. Bruce and the Rt. Hon. J. H. Thomas some time ago on the subject of Jardine resulted in representations being made to Marylebone that Australians would welcome A. P. F. Chapman as captain.”
