GAINSFID’S CUP

WAIPUKURAU RESULTS CULLUS WINS FLYINC. LADIES’ TO EASTERLY. The Waipukurau Jockey Club was favoured with perfect weather condi tions for its autumn meeting held at Waipukurau yesterday. The public took full advantage of the beautiful sun shine, with the result that there was a very good attendance. The course was iu excellent condition and the grounds generally reflected credit upon their upkeep. Rarely has a Hawke's Bay public been treated to a more exciting .day's sport iu which such a large number of close lin'shes decided only by the smallest margins have beeu witnessed. The manner in which the fields wore brought together reflected great credit upon the judgment of the handicapper, Mr H. Coyle. Mr W. P. Russell, as judge, acquitted his difficult task with every satisfaction, while Mr R. E. Harlev got the various fields away splendidly. Not a hitch or a mishap occurred throughout the day and in all respects the meeting was one of the most enjoyable held in Hawke’s Bay for some time.

Out of respect to the memory of the late Mr 8. F. Brandon, who was a prominent supporter of the club for many years, all riders in the first race wore black armbands. Mr W. Wilson received a well-earnea win when Gainsfid carried his colours to victory in the Waipukurau Cup Handicap" Immediately following the race the presentation of the cup, wnich had been donated by Mr F. Armstrong, an enthusiastic supporter of the club, took place on the lawn. The president. Mr P. F. Wall, warmly congratulated Mr Wilson on his fine win. To win a race of that nature on the Waipukurau course required a horse that was a good stayer, and a tribute was due to the trainer, Mr D. M. Ducker, for the way that the horse hnd been prepared, and also to the rider for the good judgment shown in his horsemanship. In a brief acknowledgment Mr Wilson said that during the several years in which he had been interested in racing this was the first trophy he had won and he was proud of it. Much of the success of the meeting was due to the work done by the secretary. Mr W. G. Nightingnle. and his officials, who carried out their duties in a capable manner. Pleasure to the day’s outing was added to bv the programme of popular selections played by the Waipukurau Town Band. The totalisator handled £6736 16/for the day as against £6295 10/- for the same day last year, being an increase of £441. Details of the racing are as under: — MAIDEN RACK Of £6O; 6 furlongs. 3 Mr T. At the tar turn the favourite drew out slightly from Honanga, while Takiri, Lady Cheval and Marae Quex had improved their positions. Racing across the top Hatuma was well clear of Takiri who had run into second place from Honanga. The favourite led the way into the straight from Takiri, and once in line for the post the latter threw out a determined challenge and a great Battle ensued all the way to the judge. Over the last 50 yards it appeared that Takiri would run on to win comfortably, but the favourite hung desperately and in a most exciting finish Takiri had an advantage of a halfneck as they raced past the post.
