WAIPUKURAU COUNCIL MEETS. VARIOUS MATTERS DISCUSSED The monthly meeting of the Waipukurau Borough Council was held last evening, his Worship the Mayor, Mr I. W. N. Mi.kie, presiding over Crs. R. W. Carpenter, J. L. Brathwaite, J. McCarthy, G. E. Granger, T. Staines, H. A. Martin, and H. M. Tansley, borough everseer, and J. Gardner, borough inspector. Mr W. E. Barnard, M..P, Napier, wrote thanking the council for its prompt and kindly expressions of sympathy in regard to the recent floods at Meeanee, and the council’s support for a proposed art union op the settlers’ behalf.—Received. An application for the use of Russell Park for the holding of tho Bible Class sports on Easter Monday was received from the Presbyterian Young Women’s Bible Union. —Granted. The Waipukurau Chamber of Commerce wrote again requesting that the council consider the erection of street name plates when the estimates were being prepared.—The overseer was authorised to make inquiries as to the cost of the work. The municipal solicitor wrote stating that in his opinion the Borough Council was liable in the ease of any accident arising in connection with a power pole on the corner of Holywood Terrace and Porangahau road; furthermore, hi: considered the polo constituted a nuisance. After discussion the Mayor and Cr. McCarthy were appointed to confer with the Central Hawke’s Bay Power Board in reference to the removal of the pole. The Waipukurau Unemployed Association wrote asking for the use of a borough lorry for the carting o." firewood, which some of the unemployed bad cut ia their own time. —After discussing the matter it was decided that in the interests of the ratepayers the request be declined, and to point out. that in granting the use of the lorry on a previous occasion for carting wood on , a community basis the council had gone as far as it could. Advice was received of the levaluation of four properties in the borough under the Valuation of Lands Amendment Ael, 1933,—The letter was received, I bough the council was not in agreement with the amount of the reduction effected and considered the advisability uf applying for u revaluation of the whole of the borough. An invitation to attend the opening of the United Districts Fire Brigades’ Association’s conference at Waipukurau on Good Friday night and also the unokc concert and prize-giving on Easter Mondday night was extended to the Mayor and councillors by the secretary of the Waipukurau Fire Brigade.— Received. committee accounts amounting to £452 9/8 were passed for payment. OFFICERS’ REPORTS. The borough overseer reported as follows:—Farm road is being widened at the narrowest points with spoil from the metal pit. Some small slips came down in Racecourse road and these have been cleared. Portion of the concrete footpath in Porangahau road was lifted about !J inches as it was dangerous to pedestrian traffic. The back of the path was dug out and a root from an elm tree about 5 inches thick was cut through and removed, the footpath being then repaired with cement. Two concrete crossing blocks have been renewed ;.t Airlie Lane crossing. Maintenance work and clearing storm water sumps has been carried out at Northumberland street, Russell street, Wellington road, St. Joseph street, Jellieoe street, Fleming road, Racecourse road, and Main street east. Racecourse road, Farm road, St. Mary’s road and Airlie Lane have been patched wtih red metal. The painting of the fire brigade station has boon completed. Ten men working under the No. 5 unemployment scheme have been engaged as follows: —Digging drain Pah Flat, tidying and weeding reserves and cemetery, loading metal and shir le. The following licenses have been issued and fees received:—l taxi (£2); 1 hoarding (£1 15/-); 15 heavy traffic (£97 19/3); 3 motor drivers (15/-); making 390 to date. The borough inspector reported:— Building permits: One permit has been isued at an estimated value of £5O; fee paid 5/-, Water reticulation: For the month of February the centrifugal pump ran 160 hours. The number of units of electricity used was 7422, and tho estimated amount of water numped was 3,200,000 gallons. For the corresponding period last year, the centrifugal pump ran 213| hours using 9954 | units of electricity and the estimated amount of water pumped was 4,270,000 gallons. Infectious and notifiable diseases: No case has been reported within the borough during tho past 16 weeks.
