HASTINGS GYMKHANA

In Aid of Children’s Homes MANY NOVEL FEATURES A remark heard at the Hawke’s Bay Autumn Show on Thursday: “Isn’t it a beautiful day!”—“Yes, J hope it is like this next Thursday.” Such a hope will bo in the hearts of many from now until Thursday, when the huge gymkhana in aid of the Hawke’s Bay Children’s Homes will be held on the Hastings Racecourse. The popularity of gymkhanas in Hastings has been given ample proof in past years when similar functions have attracted large crowds, but with the multiplicity of special features as well as the customary side-shows and events this year’s function promises to eclipse all previous effoits, both with regard to attendance and fun. Tho fact that the gymkhana is being held next week has made it possible for an event which would otherwise not have been possible to be staged. This is a mystery tent conducted by tho members of the J. C. Williamson Comic Opera Company, which will be giving two performances in Hastings next week. Similar side-shows have been conducted by the members of the company in other towns and the public may be assured that tho mystery tent on Thursday will be something extra special and worthy of patronage. It might be mentioned that the members of the company will attend a dance in the racecourse tea kiosk on Thursday night. Another entertaining item will be the mongrel dog show, and owners of the ugliest or o'ldest-looking dogs are invited to compete. No dog possessing a pedigree even one generation in length will be allowed to enter. There will be various horse events, Maori hakas and poi dances, stalls for the sale of flowers, cakes, produce, meat, and so on; afternoon tea, games and competitions, tugs-o’-war, Highland dancing, a baby show, and numerous other attractions. The admission to the grounds is 6d for adults, and nothing for children, and every admission ticket will give its holder a chance of winning a valuable gift. You will be sorry afterwards if you miss being present at the racecourse on Thursday.
