CARNIVAL AT NAPIER N.Z. PLUNGE RECORD BROKEN.. NEW H.B. FIGURES FOR 440 YARDS Though the public gave poor support to the benefit swimming carnival held by the Port Ahuriri, Te Awa and Napier Swimming Clubs, those who did attend at the Napier Public Baths last night wore amply rewarded. C. Atkinson broke his national long plunge record of 65ft. 4ins. by Ift. 4ins. D. P. Lindsay, a visitor from Manawatu Centre, broke the Hawke’s Bay 440 yards record by 5 2-5 secs, by swimming the distance in 5 win. 39 4-5 secs. His sectional times were 65 seconds for the 100 yards, 2 min. 38 secs, for the 220, 3 min. 45 secs, at the 300 yards mark, 5 min. 9 secs, at the 440 yards and 5 min. 39 4-5 secs, for the whole distance. The previous record was made by B. Watkins at Hastings on February 23, 1933, in 5 min. 45 1-5 secs. This carnival was organised to benefit the Mayor’s Relief Fund, but the meagre attendance will result in a comparatively small sum falling to the credit of the fund. Besides members of the three clubs which contributed to the programme, Danncvirke sent eight swimmers rrom its club. The four clubs—Port, Dannevirke, Napier and Te Awa—with their entrants in the water polo, the short distances, and the diving, between them gave good racing.
