POST OFFICE AT PORT

Negotiations for Site SITUATION “WELL IN HAND” From what the chief postmaster, Mr N. R. Mclsaac, said at the Napier Chamber of Commerce meeting last night, it would appear that the Fost and Telegraph Department is fully cognisant of the claims of Port Ahuriri to the building of a new post office. He explained that it rested largely with the Public Works Department, which had to decide upon the most suitable site, to which flic president of the chamber, Air W. Harvey, retoiled: “Somebody lias said it is a battle of the sites.” The president raised the point by saying that many Port Ahuriri residents had telephoned him about the matter. For about three years the Port people had lived in hopes, and they

were now anxious to know what was likely to be done. Perhaps Mr i.lclaaac could tell them. Mr Mclsaac replied that negotiations* were in train for the acquisition of a desirable site. The department wai just as anxious to properly house its officers at the Port as anyone else, but the negotiations were not complete, though they had not been shelved. The president: Are the negotiation* well advanced? Mr Mclsaac said it wa. a matter for the Public Works to ehoose a site, but the situation was “well in hand.” The president: Somebody said it it • battle of the sites. Mr Mclsaacs demurred, and the subject lapsed.
