AUTUMN SHOW

POPULAR OUTING LARGE CROWD ATTENDS New Features Introduced GREAT MAORI DISPLAY With their traditional good luck, the Hawke’s Bay A. and P. Society had the absolute perfection of autumn weather for their show to-day, and as a consequence the •vent proved to be a more than usually popular outing for the public. By noon there was a great crowd of people already at the showgrounds, and from that time till 2 o’clock the attendance increased to what looked very much like being a record for any autumn show held by the society. In keeping with the spirit of enterprise that has brought the society to its present proud and prosperous state, new features were introduced into the programme for the public’s entertainment to-day. Most notable among them was the splendid and highly artistic display of baka and poi dances by teams of local Maoris, who made a rousing end to their display by performing a massed war dance in which a hundred performers took part. The whole of their display gave immense enjoyment to the spectators, who crowded about the oval to watch. This innovation was so completely successful that there is no doubt that the society will make it, or something like it, a regular feature of future autumn shows. A very large number of members and their friends availed themselves of the privilege of being allowed to wander in the society's newly-acquired Waikoko property, and on every hand one overheard congratulatory remarks on the society’s action in buying this beautiful adjunct to their grounds. The show itself was more diversely attractive than ever before, and there were more numerous and more various exhibits and displays offered for the pleasure of patrons. Exhibits of purely farming interest were of a high standard of excellence, and from the moment when the show opened they were the centre of deep interest to largo groups of farmers and breeders. The dog-trials and the Highland dancing competitions were among the most popular of the morning's attractions, and both events were watched by a large and interested, and often enthusiastic, crowd of spectators. As is always the case, the Produce Hall, with its great variety of exhibits, and with its stalls for the sale of all sorts of interesting and attractive things both useful and merely desirable, was the centre of much interest throughout the day, and the homeindustries section and the display oi Maori arts found especial favour. Other sections which proved particularly popular were the poultry exhibits, the schools section, and the floral section; and last of all must be mentioned the dogs, in whom there is always a universal and admiring interest. This year’s entries were unusually numerous and or an unusually high standard, and there was certainly uo diminution in the public’s patronage of them. The dogs were perhaps the chief centre of interest, and provided a delightful spectacle in their march-past round the oval. The horse events were hardly less popular, and the leaping match particularly provided some splendid displays of jumping. Altogether the show was an outstanding success, and once again the organisation and management were carried out by the secretary, Mr A. M Retemeyer, together with his staff and the society’s executive, so thoroughly that not a single detail seemed to have been forgotten. Features of the vegetable classes were the excellent exhibits of the Eskview School pupils. They exhibited for the first time with much scccess, gaic ing firsts, seconds and thirds in all vegetable classes and firsts in the open classes for the heaviest onions and red cabbages The exhibits of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union attracted considerable interest. Comprising jams, cakes, preserves, and examples of home-craft such as dresses, and dyed wools, this section of the show, which was boused in the Produce Shed, reflected great credit upon the ladies of the Hawke's Bay branch of the Union
