RIFLE SHOOTING

POPORANGI DEFENCE CLUB OPENING OF NEW RANGE From Our Own Correspondent. A large gathering of district residents assembled at M lianakino Station on Saturday for the purpose of witnessing the opening of the Poporangi Defence Rifle Club’s new range. The president, Mr E. B. Logan, expressed his gratitude for the keen interest shown in the club’s activities and thanked all those who so willingly helped with the construction of the new range. The club, he said, was most fortunate in having the patronage of one of Hawke’s Bay’s oldest riflemen, Mr Hector J. Smith, who so willingly gave the members the benefit of his wide knowledge of rifle club conduct. It was a matter of general regret that the club’s patroness, Miss Bessie Anderson, of Poporangi Station, was unable to attend. Tho patron, Mr Hector J. Smith, welcomed tho club to Whanakino Station, and after expressing his pleasure at being able to provide a suitable range site, wished the members many years of good sport and prosperity. He then opened the range by firing the first shot. Fourteen members took part in the competition for the Whanakino trophy, which resulted in a tie between P. Walker and T. Tankersley for first place. The shoot-otf between these two will take place at the 600 yards mound next Saturday. The scores were as follow: —

tions, seven shots and two sighters at 300 yds., 500 yds., and 600 yds. The scores of this match will count for tho first round of tho championship and the first round of the Stan Simmons Rose Bowl. The first classification shoot will take place at the week-end, and as all members are required by the Defence Department to complete this course a full attendance is requested. NAPIER DEFENDS CLUB.
