LOADINGS BY LIGHTERS
USE OF BREAKWATER BERTHS BLOCKAGE OF INNER HARBOUR In his annual report, the chairman of the Napjer Harbour Board, Mr T. M. Geddis, refers to the Inner Hathour, and tho work entailed in that area during tho year. The report stated: “During the past year considerable siltation again i:eeuireil a', the Inner Harbour, tho suction dredge Apiti being engaged on the work of removal of silt at intervals during the period. In addition, the drag-line excavator was also concentrated upon the entrance at the piers, and other work was undertaken bv the dredge J.D.O. ' ‘ Nevertheless, on various u :e:isious the Inner Harbour proved unworkable and lighters therefore made use of the temporary chutes erected at the Break water, 81 lighter loadings being successfully carried out with the accommodation provided and no less than 3D53 tons being despatched in this way. this total being made up as follows:— 11.464 quarters of beef. 26,425 carcases of mutton, 47,350 carcases of lamb. 21,469 boxes of butter. 274 crates nt cheese, 289 carcases of pork, 200 sides of veni, eight crates of turkeys, 211 crates of sundries -neat'-. s'l boxes of si:'.dries (meat., 15-1 i-iir'ons of su’i dries (meat), 1918 bags of sundries (meat)."
