SUNDAY CONCERTS.

(To the Editor.) Sir,—The enclosed letter from tho Hastings Borough Council will be of considerable interest to those members of the public who so generously support this association in its efforts to help the sick and needy among the unemployed.—Yours etc. F. J.' SPEAR. Secretary Hastings Reg'td. Unemployed Association. Hastings, 12/4/33. [Enclosure.] 12th April, 1933. Mr F. J. Spear, Hon. Secretary Hastings R.U.W.A., c/o Borough Yard, Hastings. SUNDAY NIGHT CONCERTS IN MUNICIPAL THEATRE. Dear Sir, —I am directed to inform you that representations have been made to the Council by the Ministers’ Association regarding the holding of Sunday evening concerts in tho Municipal Theatre, and it is pointed out by the ministers that it has been the practise of the various churches, for many years past, to hold their services between the hours of 7-and 8 o’clock on Sunday nights, and that by the hirers of the theatre commencing their concerts at 8.15 and having the doors opened much before 8 o’clock clashes with the observance of their Sunday evening services. Therefore, the Council has agreed to the suggestion of the ministers, who state that they have not put this plea in any narrow spirit, but as an earnest desire to safeguard the best features of life and character in the community, and that is. that the concerts should not start until 8.30 o’clock, and that the doors should not open before 10 minutes past 8. Will you please note this fact so that there will be no misunderstanding as regards opening the theatre and commencing the concerts in future. We are sending a copy of this letter to Mr C. C. Adams for his information. In view, however, of the fact that arrangements had been made prior to the receipt of tho ministers’ letter, the usual time for commencing the concert will bo permitted on Easter Sunday night, but after that the above hours will have to be observed. —Yours faithfully, PERCY R. PURSER, Town Clerk.
