SWIMMING

MAHORA CLUB NOTES SEASON NEARING THE END. WATKINS MAINTAINS GOOD FORM. (By “Suburbanite.”) The Mahora. Club held its second last carnival of the season on Thursday evening. In spite of a keen wind the stand was fairly well filled, and those present were rewarded with some very keen racing. , Two club chainpionshin events wore swum—the junior girls and the intermediate boys. Tho winners were Miss K. Fannin and L. Vesty. . For the first .time this season the senior event was a 440-yard handicap Watkins was scratch with Jack Taylor on the forty-second mark, the limit man, Hayes and Ashman being on 27 and 35 respectively. Watkins, swimming powerfully, cut out tho first 50 in 29secs. and the 100 in 64sccs. Hayes and Ashman were passed at the 175yard turn, and the first 220 yards were covered in 2.40. After passing J. Taylor, Watkins cased up slightly and finished in 5.27 2-5, a second outside his Hawke’s Bay record.

There was very little separating the three finishes in the junior boys’ 100 yards race. Tritt and Rivers had a great struggle over the last five yards, the former just getting there by a touch. Unfortunately, the winner broke and had to bo disqualified. Rivers is swimming very well at present.

In Napier last Friday he covered the 50yds. in 32secs. —2secs. lower than his previous best. With proper coaching he should do well next season in the intermediate class.

The intermediate 50yds. went to Les Tavler, who won by two feet from Vesty, with Tritt in third place. Handicapped on 32, Lea surprised registering 30 2-ssecs. A fortnight with Frank Allan has improved his style Thompson won the schoolchildren s event, a 100yds. handicap, by 4 feet. Ken Wrightson and B. Coles were not. far apart for second and third place. Bruee Coles finished very strongly over the last 25 yards, and had he started this effort five yards sooner he would have won. Both the junior girls’ 50yds. and ladies' 100yds. provided great finishes, touches separating the competitors on each occasion. In the former event Miss K. Fannin gave Joan Fearn a five-second start and just caught her to win at the post. In the ladies’ 100 yds. Annie Anderson conceded Fay Horne 10 seconds and also just got up to touch ahead of Fay. The teams’ race went to Rivers, Tritt and Wise. In this event Hayes, Round and Nesbitt, having registered three wins, are certainties for the Simmonds Gold Stars. Prior to the commencement of the diving last night, J. Taylor was leading Ashman by one point in tho W iso Shield competition. By gaining first place Ashman has reversed the position, and with next Thursday the last carnival interest should be very keen in this event. At the conclusion of tho carnival a polo match was played between a visiting Napier team and the Mahora Club. Each side scored a goal and the result was a draw. Simpson and Boardman were the goal throwers, and Mr. Fisher, of Heretaunga, an able referee.
