Early yesterday morning, at 12.15 a.m. to be exact, the residents of a certain street near tlm Central School, Napier, were surprised to hear a slight scuffling noise towards the back of the house. Both husband and wife were reading at the time, but thick curtains at the window stopped the light from filterimr through which otherwise might warn possible intruders. Rounds of wary footsteps continued, followed by a surreptitious turning of the bark door handle. The husband hastily but quietly donned dressing gown and slippers. then made in the direction of the wash house, but in so doing stepped on to a creaky board in the kitchen.
