BIG RYE-GRASS YIELD
treble previous crop. GISBORNE CERTIFIED SEED. An estimate based on early results shows that the season’s yield of machine dressed certified Tye grass seed in the Gisborne district should reach approximately 40,000 bushels, or a figure three and a half times greater than the actual output of last season. Figures in this respect were supplied by Mr. M. A. Black, instructor in agriculture at Gisborne, who has charge of the certification scheme in the district. He states that the estimate was far above his earlier expectations, for some of the crops had given a poor yield, -while the losses in machine dressing in some cases were abnormal. Apparently, however, most of the. farmers had done well, despite the few exceptional cases to the contrary.
The area certified to this year was nearly 1000 acres larger than last season, this year’s figure being 3828 acres, out of a total of 4800 acres for which certification was applied. Up to the end of February, when an estimate of the district’s crop was made, seed from 1077 acres had been dressed, and tho total yield before machine dressing was 19.722 J bushels, which dressed down to 11,8024 bushels of clean seed.
