WAIPUKURAU
NEWS AND NOTES. (From Our Special Representative.) The Wellington Artillery Band, at present in camp at the racecourse, held a grand concert at the Waipukurau Municipal Theatre last light, assisted by a number of local artists. There was a good attendance, and a first class programme of band selections, fantasias, solos, duets and marches, and humorous and vocal items, was presented, under the leadership if Sergeant W. H. Howman and Mr 1,. Wood. The programme included: Humorous fantasia, “Pop Goes the Weasel”; nautical, “A Sailor’s Memories”; humorous march, “.Tolly Coppersmith”; cornet, duet, “Besses o’ th’ Barn” (Bandsmen Newton and Bagnall); euphonium solo, “Jenny Jones” (Bandsman R. Fenton); cornet solo, “The Rosary” (Sergeant W. 11. Bowman); humorous novelty, “The Band Rehearsal”; accordion solo, “Silvery Waves” and humorous interlude (Gunner J. Prentice and his Battery Songsters); Highland dance (Miss Davies); banjo and guitar duet (Bandsmen A E. and E. A. Irwin); and humorous songs (Mr Len A'ood). His Worship the Mayor of Waipukurau, Mr R. McLean, states that he will not contest office this year nt the forthcoming municipal elections Having assumed office in 1927, when he succeeded the late Mr E. A. Goodger, Air McLean has held office for six yearn. Mr Archibald Hyslop, aged 41 years, a well-known resident of ' e Hatuma district, died at the public hospital yesterday after a long and trying illness. The deceased, who leaves a widow, served with the New Zealand Expeditionary Forces, leaving with the 13th Reinforcement. 'The funeral will leave St. Marv’s Anglican Church to-day at 2.30 p.m. Mr J. W. Harding, Mt, Vernon, left Waipukurau yesterday on a visit to Christchurch. Mr R. Ellen, lernsidc, Canterbury, is visiting friends in Waipukurau, Mr and Mrs G. E. Fow’ler.
