HASTINGS FIRE BOARD
(QUARTERLY MEETING HELD. NO SERIOUS FIRES RECENTLY. The quarterly meeting of the Hastings Fire Board was held last evening, and was presided over by His Worship the Mayor, Mr. G. F. Roach (chairman). Others present were Messrs. G. Hay, G. Mitford-Taylor, and Graham McCormick. Accounts totalling £479 0/11 were passed for payment, and various routine business was dealt with. The following is the quarterly- report of the Brigade Superintendent, Mr. R. Henderson:— During the quarter we have had seven calls, none of them being of a very serious nature. Tho lire at tho borough destructor was the only serious fire we had during the quarter, and that building, through being on the outskirts of the borough, was practically destroyed before we arrived. We had to run out a single lead of 1,500 feet of hose, and consequently our pressure was considerably diminished at the branch. However, we were successful in saving the brickwork by keeping it cool. The other fires comprised one cottage, the blinds and curtains of which were burnt and tho paper on the walls, one false alarm, one haystack, and three grass fires. One of the grass fires was by arrangement at the Memorial Hospital, burning tho dry grass round tho nurses’ home. 'l’lio motors have run for approximately 50 hours each during the quarter. The local brigade is at present in training for a demonstration to bo held at Carterton next Easter. The plant is all in good working order. The new station is being pushed forward, and the contractor is making good progress. The superintendent’s house is nearly finished and will be j ready for occupation in a few days.
