QUALITY OF CHEESE

MINISTER PROMISES ACTION.

BOARD S PROPOSALS ADOPTED. Wellington, March 8. That the proposals of th» Dairy Board, adopted at a conference representative of all sections of iihe dairying industry on Tuesday, when put into effect would result in aj great improvement in the quality of cheese was the view expressed to-night by Mr W. A. lorns, chairman of the board, prior to his departure for London by the Akaroa. “I really do believe, ’• said Mr lorns, “that the definite action on the proposals promised by the Minister of Agriculture is a real step forward and will produce good results in the cheesemaking industry.”

Mr lorns said that the conference was one of the most representative gatherings ever held in connection with the dairying industry. Several hours were spent in discussing the cheesequality problem, and he was very gratified with the result of the conference, which unanimously approved the proposals set out by the Dairy Board. Following this, the Minister of Agriculture made a definite statement that ho would give effect to the proposals At its meeting on Monday the Now Zealand Dairy Produce Board unanimously adopted a resolution that its representatives at the conference to discuss the cheese position should definitely and clearly state that the board was not satisfied with the efforts of the past and wanted definite action taken as follows; (a) That regulations be gazetted to prevent a supplier from leaving ono factory for another; (b) tho definite establishment of milk-grading, with differentia] payment ; (c) the licensing of factory managers; (d) the dairy division of the Department of Agriculture to take over a cheese factory.

The conference, held on Tuesday, was representative of every section of the dairying industry. The Minister of Agriculture presided, and those present included representatives of the Dain Board, National Dairy Association, dairy division of the Department of Agriculture, Scientific and Industrial Research Department, Dairy Research Institute, Massey College, dairy factory managers, merchants and several members of Parliament interested in the industry. Mr A. C. Rowson, a London merchant in Tooley street, who handles large quantities of New Zealand butter and cheese, was also present and gave the conference much valuable information.

Tho discussion was of a helpful and constructive nature, it being evident that all present were desirous of doing their best to assist in placing the cheese industry on a much sounder basis. The proposals set out by the Dairy Board on its resolution were unanimously adopted, it being realised that a better and more uniformly good supply of milk for cheese factories was essential to secure an output of higher quality in all respects. While it was fully realised that the board’s proposals constituted a procedure much in advance of existing conditions, it was felt by all that the circumstances necessitated a firm yet judicious handling of the situation in the interests of all concerned, especially the producers, who had everything to gain from an improvement in cheese quality with the resulting improvement in market values.
