MOTOR TAXATION

BRITAIN’S BURDEN. Great Britain is by far the highest taxed country as regards motor vehicles. For example, a 16 h.p. car with £l6 tax in England, pays £2 15/- in Belgium, £9 2/6 in France, £l3 11/- in Germany, and £2 17/6 in New York. Even more startling is it to find that on a car which is taxed in Great Britain at £34 the tax in New York is £3 18/-. The total annual taxation of all motor vehicles in Great Britain amounts to £57,378,420. Of this gigantic sum £28,102,420 represents vehicles taxes and £29,276,600 is the figure for the petrol tax. The average amount paid in taxation on each vehicle is £l2 16/-. and the total number of motor licenses current at the end of November of last year was 2,195,225. There were 1,076,128 private cars licensed, and their contribution in vehicle tax was £13,521,505.
