AIDING DAIRY FARMERS

OUT OF UNEMPLOYED TAX. N.S.W. SCHEME. The State Government of New South Wales has earmarked £lOO,OOO to assist needy dairy farmers who are prepared to increase production. The funds for this purpose are derived from the unemployed tax, which is providing the State with £5,000,000 to £6,000,000 per annum. A Dairy Promotion Board has been appointed to administer and control the plan, and it is officially stated that advances will be made available up to £4OO a person, provided that a total sum of £6OO is being spent on necessary works or on the purchase of plant or stock. The person concerned must himself provide one-third of the total cost. The advances wil] carry 3 per cent, interest, and the interest and principal must be repaid monthly, over a period of ten years in the case of perishable assets, and 15 years where the assets are more enduring. This special State assistance will be confined to recognised dairying districts on the coast and to a few named dairying districts inland. Advances will be made for the following up to 66 2-3 per cent, of the amounts mentioned:— £ Materials for fencing 50 Materials for house 50 Materials for buildings 75 Farming plant 75 Dairying plant 75 Dairy stock 200 Pigs 10 Horses 40 Sundries 25

The official announcement of the scheme stated that ‘it is proposed to seek the fullest assistance and cooperation of the butter factory managements in the various centres where factories are established for the purpose of receiving and reporting on applications in a preliminary way for submission to the board; for advancing moneys to successful applicants, after approval of the board; for supervision generally of approved expenditures; and for collection of moneys received in repayment by deductions from the monthly returns to suppliers. The Government has every reason to believe that the directors of the various factories throughout the State will be only too pleased to assist in this way m the promotion of the dairying industry; and it is recognised that the success of the scheme is to a great extent dependent upon the organisations.”
