A nest of gamblers in a paddock close to Makaraka racecourse was broken up by the police on Saturday afternoon during the Poverty Bay Turf Club’s meeting, seven men being arrested. This morning three showmen, Michael Hannah, alias Harry Harris, Victor Hannah and’ Thomas King were each fined £2O for frequenting a public place for the purpose of betting. Two others, whose names were suppressed, were fined £5 and £2 respectively for ptaying Crown and Anchor. Two other betting cases are uncompleted. Detective McLeod stated that for years the paddock had been a resort for gamblers, two-up players and bookmakers on race days. The owners of the paddock had been approached by the police but did noj appear willing to assist and the advisability of prosecuting them foe permitting gambl-. was being considered.—Press Assn.
