THE HAWKE’S BAY CENTRE i FAST SEASON REVIEWED. PROSPECTS FOB THIS YEAR. The following is the annual report of the Hawke’s Bay Swimming Centre to be presented at the annual meeting of delegates to-night:— “In presenting the thirty-eighth annual report and balance sheet members will be pleased to note that the year’s operations have resulted in a balance being available to carry forward for the ensuing year. “Finance.—We desire to express our appreciation of the New Zealand Council for remitting fees due by us. They have also> granted an exemption of two years on account of registration fees and this concession has also been of great assistance to our clubs. “National Championships.—The centre was represented at the national championships by Miss L. Hood, of the Heretaunga Club, who competed in the ladies’ diving championship, but was unsuccessful in regaining her title. The centre was represented at the intermediate championships by Messrs-Wat-kins, Redman, Johnstone and Kirkley. Master Watkins was successful in gaining second place in the final of the 440 yards championship. The centre expresses its appreciation to the above competitors on their splendid conduct at the meetings and congratulates the winners on their success. We sincerely trust they will now assist the centre and their clubs by imparting to other competitors the valuable information they gained at the national championships “Provincial Championships. — These were conducted at Hastings on 22nd and 23rd February last and were most successful. We desire to thank the Heretaunga Club for the great assistance rendered in conducting the meetings and also to the ladies’ committee for attending*to the supper arrangements

“Club Membership.—As a result of the slackness of several elabs we are unable to present these figures in the report, but indications point to an increase over the preceding year. Last year we had to record the fact that some clnbs were in arrears with fees and returns and the same position ha c arisen this year. One club will hold np the centre returns to the New Zeaiano Council and it is hoped these matters wfl! be attended to in future. **Educational.—Owing to the withinwal of Government grant no assist*! 4

ance can now be received from the council. This centre, however, obtained most of the stock of certificates then in hand and we will be able to carry on for some time but it is hoped that the Government grant will be re-instat-ed as soon as possible as the work accomplished is of natioal importance. “Certificates.—The following certificates have been issued in connection with championship events held during the past season: Record certificates 8, championship winners 30, standard times (juniors) 45. Miss B. Smith, of the Te Awa School, and Master T. Kirkley, of the Mahora Schoo), were winners of the schoolgirls and schoolboys’ championships and have boon presented with medals supplied by the New Zealand Council. “Other competitions conducted by the centre resulted as follows:Cooper Cup, championship points, J Miller (Gisborne); Kinross White Cup. inter-club points, N. Prebble (Napier); War Memorial Cup, men, F. West (Heretaunga); Luke Wilson Cup, ladies, Miss T. Morrin (Mahora); Water Polo Cup, Heretaunga Club. ‘ ‘ National Championships.—Members are already aware that the senior national championships have been allotted to this centre for 1933. It has alredy been suggested to the council that these be held on 18th, 20th and 22nd February next. It is hoped that this meeting will be as successful as the last national meeting held here in 1926.

“General.—The balance sheet shows the present financial position of the centre. We feel that with the support accorded us by our affiliated clubs we can confidently look forward to the coming season being a highly successful one.’’
