“BARRETTS OF WIMPOLE ST.”
LONDON AND NEW YORK SUCCESS AT HASTINGS NEXT FRIDAY. Theatrical managers in these times dare not import plays and players from abroad about which there may be anything more than an intelligent risk J. C. Williamson, Ltd. have their per sonal representatives in London and New York, and only those attractions which have proved outstanding successes, and are likely to repeat their success in Australia and New Zealand are acquired. Thus theatregoers ‘' down under” are in the fortunate position of knowing that the production they arc asked to patronise have stood the “acid test of the discriminating audiences of at least two of the largest cities in the world.” "The Barretts of Wimpole Street,” which is to be presented at the Muncipal Theatre, Hastings, on Friday next, with a distinguished English star (Mar garet Rawlings), and a notable company of actors and actresses mostly making their first appearance in New Zealand, is one of the very few London and New York successes that have held the public for upwards of two years. This poignant love story appeals to all classes, and to all ages, eontaining, as it does, scenes that are tragic, scenes that are pricelessly humorous, scenes that are tense and exciting, and scenes that are tender and romantic. The atmosphere created by the dainty setting, the frocks of the women and the clothes of the men, together with the . almost uncanny lighting effects, all blend in the most natural way, and denote meticulous attention to detail. The company is now playing to sold-out houses in Dunedin, and to obviate any self-reproach prudent patrons will doubtless either bespeak their seats now, or make an early appearance at Fail’s booking office, when the plans are opened to the public on Wednesday next. Other interesting particulars are advertised.
