Owing to the recent rain and melting snow the Central Hawke’s Bay rivers are again fairly full and are very discoloured, with the result that fishing will be out of the question for some days. z Excellent progress is being made with the extension to the steam heating system of the men’s wards at the Waipukurau Hospital, and it is hoped that the installation will be completed in the course of c week or so. Rowe, with their family leave this afternoon for Onehunga. NEWS AND NOTES. For the first half of the financial year ended September 30, the profit from the direct sale of energy by the Central Hawke’s Bay Electric Power Board was £330 6/9 with an additional profit of £329 3/1 derived from temporary investments and guarantees. The board’s capital expenditure as at September 30 was £140,712 18/-, so that the £330 6/9 energy profit represents only .234 per cent. Thanks to repair work carried out at the recent subsidence at Kopua, conditions are. now almost normal once more, and trains are able to cross the washout instead of having to be shunted across by an engine at one end ,and then connected to another engine at the other end of the damaged section.' The area under the jurisdiction of the Central Hawke’s Bay Electric Power Board is 1,300 square miles, whilst that of Dannevirke is 769 square mjles, and Horowhenua 630 square miles. Despite the fact that the area has not a large population, the board has never had recourse to rating, whilst all obligations regarding depreciation etc. have been met. In his report to the monthly meeting of the Central Hawke’s Bay Power Board to-day, Mr G. E. Fowler, secretary-manager, stated that despite the great economic stress to consumers, obligations had been very well met, and said that a tribute should be paid to them for the manner in which they had met their liabilities to the board. The Waipukurau Town Band will render another of its popular sacred concerts at the Municipal Theatre on Sunday night, when a varied programme of selections will be rendered under the baton of Mr E. Malkin.
