NEW TARADALE ROAD
NAPIER MAYOR’S VIEW. HARBOUR. BOARD TO BE APPROACHED. In connection with the resolution passed by the Taradale Town Board regarding the need for a direct road to Taradale, the Mayor of Napier (Mr J. Vigor Brown) replying to the board last night, stated that if times were normal he woukl strongly support the proposal, but under existing conditions he questioned if it would be wise to press local bodies to join in such a scheme. It appeared that owing to finance the Highways Board would be unable to assist, in the project, while at the present time ratepayers were averse to doing anything that would mean an increase in their rates. If the board still wished the matter to be proceeded with he considered it shouM address the Harbour Board direct, which body might enter into some
scheme to carry out the work, as it owned much of the land that such a road would pass through and the board would ultimately receive a great deal of benefit. The chairman (Mr J. Williamson) stated that the reply appeared to be the opinion of the Mayor only and he would like to know the views of the Borough Council on the matter. Mr A V Danvers considered that as the Harbour Board was vitally interested it should be approached on the matter, Mr C. H, Williams agreed that the letter was purely an expression of the Mayor’s opinion, and on Mr Williams’s motion the board decided to pl'ace the matter before the Napier Commissioners and members of th. Borough Council.
