Mr. Cornes, who is aged 30, aud his father are in partnership as grocers, and jointly heli the ticket in the Irish sweepstake. When they learned that Francis Ritchie, aged 15, who lives only a few doors away, had also drawn a horse, they came to an agreement with him under which if either Sandwich or Bonny Bright Eyes (Ritchie’s horse) gained a place the owner of tin winning ticket would pay the other £5OOO for first, £2500 for second, and £l5OO for third. So Master Ritehie. besides the £7OO odd which he receives for drawing Bonny Bright Eyes, will get £l5OO out of Mr. Comes’ prize of £lO,OOO. The Cornes family and the Ritchio family endeavoured vainly to h»ar the result of the race by ’.short wave wireless, but the news eventually reached them by cable. The £lO,OOO prize will be increased by about £lOOO through exchange.
