BAD STRETCH OF ROAD
TURN-OFF AT WAITANGI MOTORISTS’ COMMENTS The bad condition of the surface of the Napier-Hastings road between the abattoir and the turn-off into the Waitangi Dip was mentioned at a meeting of the executive of the Hawke’s Bay Automobile Association yesterday afternoon.
Dr W. D. Fitz Gerald said that the present condition of the road constituted a very real danger and he attributed it to the fact that it was made use of by heavily laden vehicles travelling at too fast a speed. Other members of the executive stated that they knew 'f instances where motor cars had suffered broken springs and axles on account of the rough road, and they agreed that it was time something was done in tie matter.
There was no doubt, said Dr FitzGerald, that there were many excessively loaded vehicles on the road at night when they were not likely to be caught by the county inspector. A great deal of overloading of shingle was done, and if anyone walked round the streets of Napier at night they could see the lorries being unloaded.
