THE FIGURES FOR AUGUST RETURNS FROM THE CENTRES. Wellington, Aug. 31. Customs revenue collected at Wellington in August totalled £179,329, against £178,779 for the previous 'August. This included £10,767 derived from the increase of twopence per gallon on petrol; otherwise there would have been a decrease of £10,217. For the eight months the net revenue was £1,380,728 against £1,502,295 for the corresponding period of last year. The duty on motor spirit for August was £32,300 at sixpence and £10,767 at twopence, and for the eight months £390,505 against £336,299. The tyre tax was £lO3l against £3246, for August 1931, and for the eight months £12,691 against £18,546. The beer duty for August was £4688 against £4377, and for the eight months £39,848 against £32,646. CHRISTCHURCH FIGURES. Christchurch, Aug. 31. The Customs duties collected at Christchurch during August amounted to £75,354 6/4, the highest amount collected in any one month of the present calendar year. Details are: Net Customs, August 1932 £75,354, August 1931 £68,835; beer duty, £7567, £6678; motor spirit tax, £15,273, £16,347; tyre duty, £433, £786. For the calendar year from January to August the figures were: Customs, 1932 £487,797, 1931 £472,884; beer duty, £57,592, £48,724; motor spirit tax, £130,225, £158,025; tyre duty, £6lBl, £10,240. TNE DUNEDIN RETURNS. Dunedin, Aug. 31. Following are the Customs returns for August, the figures for the same month last year being given in parentheses: Net Customs return, £51,481 0/8 (£45,829 2/3); beer duty, £17,450 18/6 (£21,590 5/8); petrol tax, £11,042 7/- (£9028 11/2); tyre tax, £331 16/(£1491, 14/3). THE NAPIER RETURNS. INCREASE ON LAST YEAR ‘ Customs revenue collected in Napier last month was £8023 7/3 more than it was in the corresponding month of last year, the total in the month just ended being £32,374 7/3, compared with £24,351 in August of last year. Details for August 1932 are as follow:—Customs £29,306 16/10, beer £596 10/4, miscellaneous £2471 0/1, total £32,374 7/3.
