FARMING MATTERS

H.B. UNION’S MEETING. VARIOUS POINTS DISCUSSED. The monthly meeting of the Hawke’s Bay branch of the Farmers’ Union was held this morning in the Hastings Chamber of Commerce, Mr. N. P. Ericksen presiding, pending the arrival of the chairman, Mr. E. E. Talbot. Several letters were received supporting the branch’s recent protest against the regulation govering the rebate on meat sent by rail from the freezing-works to Napier, and it was resolved not to let the matter drop, but to continue the attempt to have the restrictions removed. Several members spoke in terms similar to those used when the matter was first discussed at last month’s meeting, and the general view expressed was that the regulation was unjust. The matter will again be taken up with the Railway Department. On the motion of Mr. J. A. Millar, it was decided to support a report from the committee to the Dominion conference, in connection with the collecting of levies on stock, to the effect that if the accumulated funds of boards arc not to be used to establish new markets in the East and elsewhere, that the committee considered it unnecessary for boards to continue collecting so much in levy during the present depression.

Mr. Talbot presented an enlightening report on the Dominion conference, and on the motion of Mr. J. H. Joll the president was congratulated on his efforts at the conference and his actions in nominating Capt. Colbeek to oppose the Dominion president was endorsed.

Mr. Millar moved that the president ’s action in opposing the local Unemployment Committee attitude in taking men off primary production and giving them to local bodies be strongly endorsed by this meeting, and that the union’s opinions on the matter be forwarded to the Minister of Employment. —Carried. Mr. Lowe moved that, on account of the overbuilding in our towns a remit be sent to the Minister of Employment, strongly protesting against the attitude of subsidising the building trade out of the unemployment funds, under the No. 10 scheme.—Carried.
