OTAGO REPS.

MATCH WITH CANTERBURY SCORES COME QUICKLY. 15-POINT VICTORY FOR OTAGO By Telegraph—Press Association Dunedin, July 29. Fine weather ruled for the representative match, Otago v. Canterbury, at Carisbrook this afternoon. The ground was heavy and somewhat cut up after the early game. The attendance was 10,000.

Otago kicked off against the sun and the cross-wind and at once carried play to the Canterbury line. From a scramble in front Hartnell and Allan dribbled the ball over and Hartnell scored. Bathgate converted. The visitors replied with a great try. The ball came to Oliver, who cut through the Otago men and sent out to Dunshea, who scored. Vincent failed to convert. The Canterbury backs got away again and Rowe scored wide out. Brown’s kick was a failure. Simon broke away from a scrum and sent out to Wilson, who passed to Smith, who scored. Bathgate converted.

The game was bright and open. After 23 minutes Oliver retired with an in. jured arm. Hollow, Mortlock, Dunshea and Rowe combined in a nice rush down the field. A free kick saw the ball in touch a few yards from the Otago line. Rowe threw the ball to Pease, who dashed round and Otago were caught, napping. Pease scored. Brown failed to convert

Oliver now returned to the field. McSkimming made a great run down the side line to within a yard of the Canterbury line, where he was grassed and Canterbury cleared. Simon made a nice opening at half-way and after all the backs had handled the ball Mackenzie scored. Hartnell failed to convert At half-time the score stood:— Otago 13 Canterbury s 9

SECOND HALF. The second spell opened evenly. Both sides had turns at attacking. Play went quickly from one end of the field to the other. Mortlock was caught offside and Bathgate kicked a goal. Play was much more ragged than in the first spell but there were several exciting incidents. Again Canterbury were caught offside and Hartnell kicked a goal. Otago were more consistent in attacking and the Canterbury men were unwilling to go down before the southern forwards. For the greater part of the spell play was in the Canterbury half. The visitors were frequently penalised for offside play. Niven, Simon and Hamilton got away and the last named scored under the posts. Bathgate converted. The final score was:— Otago • • 24 Canterbury 9
