BRILLIANT GATHERING

HAVELOCK NORTH GOLF CLUB’S BALL. The committee of the Havelock Golf Club may well be congratulated on the complete success of the ball which they held last evening in the new Town Board hall, Havelock North, the room being crowded with dancers from all parts of the district. About 100 couples were present. All the arrangements were carried out with much attention to detail, which helped to make the function bright and enjoyable for everyone. Mr. L. Brathwaite, hon. secretary, spared no trouble in his efforts before the dance, and also as M.C. during the evening. Miss Betty Brathwaite, hon. secretary of the ladies’ committee, also contributed greatly towards the organisation. Mrs. H. von Dadelszen, Mrs. Masterson, and Miss Scott were others of the committee who were very busily helping with supper and other details which all involved considerable hard work and thought. There was a cosy little sitting-room for those who did not wish to dance, with a fire adding cheerful warmth, and brass jars of japonica and spring bulbs were amongst the card tables and easy chairs. The ladies’ dressing-room also had a fire, which was appreciated by those who had motored from a distance, and the hall was well warmed with electric heaters.

A very delicious supper was served under a marquee at the back of the hall, with plenty of chairs and carpets for comfort, the long tables being laden with appetising dishes interspersed with silver vases filled with spring flowers and Iceland poppies. Miss Betty Cooper’s orchestra provided bright music, the supper extras being played by Mr. Neil Appleby. Just before supper Miss Grantham and Miss Ralston gave a delightful exhibition of the Quickstep, which was heartily applauded, and watched with much admiration. As an encore the new waltz was demonstrated, this being equally popular. Miss Patston wore a graceful frock of powder blue marietta with a long flared skirt and pretty bustle effect at the back, and Miss Grantham looked very smart and neat in a black suit as her partner.

Mrs. H. von Dadelszen wore a becoming gown of black silk net with a scarlet flower on the bodice, the long skirt in alternate bands of flared net and taffetas. Mrs. Masterson was in pale green meiie, with a moulded bodice, and green net flared flounces on the skirt, and a scarlet coatee. Miss Scott’s frock was of heavy ivory satin with a moulded hip line and flared hem and posy of real yellow flowers on the shoulder, also a yellow coatee.

Miss Betty Brathwaite wore a dainty dress of flame georgette, the skirt having finely gaged flounces, with a coatee of flame and silver brocaded tissue trimmed with fur. Her mother, Mrs. Brathwaite, wore a model frock of black silk lace, the skirt hanging in soft flares, with a fur coat.

Others present were: —Mrs. H. Brathwaite, in black and pink floral georgette with a black satin coat; Mrs. J. Couper, Mary blue satin with a long skirt and bustle bow and sash effect at the back; Mrs. Lambe, palest pink chiffon model with narrow bands of fine black Valenciennes lace as pretty trimming; Mrs. lan McLeod, maize satin model frock cut to a deep V at the back of the close fitting bodice, and a long prettily stitched aud flared skirt; Mrs. 8. A. Estaugh, brown satin bcaute in a long flared effect with a coatee to tone in amber shades; Mrs. P. Barker, long moulded frock of pink satin and lace with lace flared at the hem; Mrs. J.
