LATE CABLES IN BRIEF. Four People Drowned. An automobile left in reverse gear cost the lives of the four daughters of Otto Hoffstrom, at Peace River, Vancouver, when it backed into the river as he started to leave the ferry on his way to a church picnic. U.S. Prohibition. Without formality the recorded vote of the U.S. Senate yesterday unanimously consented to place on the calender for future consideration a constitutional amendment to substitute State liquor control for the Eighteenth Amendment. Libel Action. A libel action by Lady Louis Mountbatten against' the newspaper People” was settled on the basis of the defendants apologising and paying the plaintiff’s costs. The Chief Justice impounds a copy of the publication, remarking that some of the libels were criminal. Mr. Norman Birkett, K.C., pointed out that Lord Mountbatten was ordered with his ship to Malta in August, 1931. His wife naturally decided to accompany him, taking their, two children, and thereby occasioning the atrocious and abominable rumours. "It is a matter of acute difficulty to ascertain the actual author or source but if the author or repeater is discovered no mercy will be shown,” said Mr. Birkett.
