“STEALING THE BRIDE”
A BALKAN CUSTOM. HILARITY TURNED TO SLAUGHTER. (United Press Association—By CableCopyright.) (Received 9, 11.40 a.m.) Belgrade, July 8. The old Balkans custom of ‘‘stealing the bride” resulted in three being killed in the village of Novibazar. When a girl marries out of her owti village it is customary for the father of the bridegroom to bring an escort of friends and forcibly abduct the promised bride. Generally the rite is of a hilarious character, but this time the peasant father of the bride refused to let his daughter go, so when the bridegroom’s friends seized her the bride’s brother prepared an ambush and intercepted the raiders, killing the bridegroom and two friends and badly wounding 13 others. The bride was then carried back in triumph.
