MAORIS’ MATCH NORTH ISLAND WINS PRINCE OF WALES CUP. SOUTH BADLY BEATEN. By Telegraph—Press Association. Palmerston North, July 9. The Prince of Wales Cup match between the North Island and the South Island Maoris was played today in the presence of a large crowd. The ground was dry and there was a light wind from the north end. The North Island played with the wind.

For the first score Nun “dummied” his way through prior to handing to Potaka, who outpaced the opposition. Potaka goaled. When ou the move the North backs were dangerous but in the loose the South forwards were in the ascendant. A rush in which Tom Robinson, Tainui, Bennett and Grennell joined allowed the last-named to take a final pass and go over. Wright goaled. The South backs operated on the right wiug and a kick through caught Johnson. An awkward ball rebounded off Mantel to go over the line, a forward following through to score. Wright failed with the kick. Both sides threatened danger on occasion but play was not of the usual high order. Half-time was called with South leading. SECOND SPELL. North threw the ball about enterprisingly and evidenced superiority in this department. A rebound off a ground kick by Geary was accepted by Malcolm, who burst over wide out. cson failed. Downs was away immediately following but the final pass went astray. A clean heel enabled Nun to set the line racing. Watson came up fast to accept and cut straight through, Potaka goaled. The next score came from a forward melee on the White line, Tairua barging over. The kick failed. North were outplaying the opposition. Nun worked the blind side and sent Potaka over wide out. A brilliant run by Downs and Potaka gave the five-eighth another splendid try. The North backs finished off a perfect movement when Watson sent Meremere over, the winger running round for Wetere to goal. With the North backs again on the move Downes put in a great dash, Potaka completing. Johnson goaled. North 35 South 8 Mr T. Perata refereed.
