To-day’s Racing

H.B. Hunt and Meth ven Trots

H.B. HUNT CLUB

ANNUAL RACE MEETING DOUBLE TO MB G. D. BEATSON. LUNA LUX AND GOLD RULER, Tho Hawke’s Bay Hunt Club held its Winter Meeting to-day at Hastings in showery weather. There was a good attendance of the public, who were treated to an enjoyable day’s outing. The course was in splendid order. The arrangements for the meeting were ably carried out by the secretary, Mr H. S. Moss, and his officials, and all events were run promptly to time, In five of the events good fields faced tho starter, and the close finishes reflected credit on the handicapper, Mr H. Coyle. The large number of close finishes gave the judge, Mr W. P. Russell, a big task, but his decisions gave every satisfaction.

Only onco were the stewards called together, that being after the running of the Abbotsford Handicap, when an inquiry was held into the jostling over the last hundred yards of Head Serang (ridden by R. Marsh) by Teller (ridden by P, Atkins). The finding was that the interference was accidental, and no action was taken. In the running of the Hunters’ Hurdles, Royal Flyer, going wide on the turn, was pulled up by his rider.

In the Hunt Club Steeples, Mr G. D. Beatson obtained a popular win with Luna Lux. In the Hunters’ Flat Mr Beatson again held the winning colours, when Gold Ruler led throughout to win easily. This popular sportsman was warmly cheered by the public on his two fine successes. In the last event, the Horonui Handicap, the judge was unable to separate Jean Ladosio and Beverage., The proceedings were enlivened by selections played by the Hastings Citizens’ Band. The totalisator handled £5150, as compared with £5878 for the same meeting in 1930. No meeting was held last year owing to tho earthquake. Details are as under:— HACK AND HUNTERS’ HURDLES of £5O.
