RED CROSS RELIEF WORK

ASSISTANCE SINCE EARTHQUAKE DISTRIBUTION Ob’ GARMENTS. The large amount of assistance afforded to needy cases in the earthquake area by the Red Cross Society since the disaster on February 3, 1931, is perhaps not fully realised by the majority of residents in Napier and district. Within 24 hours of the disaster occurring the Red Cross Society established itself in Napier and Hastings, and during the emergency period between February 4 and the end of April, 10,340 garments were distributed in Napier and surrounding districts, and at Hastings 8,765 garments. Ln April, 1931, a Red Cross committee was set up in Napier for the special purpose of controlling the relief work in Hawke’s Bay, to be carried on under the Red Cross, and to date the approximate number and values of goods and garments issued are as under; — Garments.
