HOOD REPAIRS

EASY METHODS. The easiest and best way to repair , a torn hood is to stick a speciallyprepared patch on the inside with rubber solution. This is waterproof, and practically invisible for the outside. The best patches are made from a special tube-repairing material coated ou one side with fabric, but if this is not obtainable ordinary patching rubber may be used Some hood materials are made from two layers of fabric stuck together. If a piece of such material is separated it will usually be found that the adhesive surfaces will stick very well if coated with rubber solution, making excellent patches. An old hood or closed ear top often becomes porous, allowing moisture to come through, besides looking shabby. The remedy is an application of one of the various hood dressings on the market Give a thin, even coat with a 3in. brush, applying a second coat, later if necessary. If a light hood is to be folded dressings generally make it too stiff. For a black hood which is to be folded a thorough polishing with shoe polish is better than a brush-on dressing. Renewing the celluloid inside curtains need patience rather than special equipment and skill. The best results are obtained not by machine-sewing the new celluliod in place, but by handstitching it through the original needle holes.

In cases where a small split has started in a side curtain a patch of celluloid may be stuck on with celluloid solution to prevent it extending. This solution can be bought from any dealer in model aeroplane or cinema supplies.
